In Florida, floods occur more often than not, and sometimes people don’t always consider flood insurance until it's too late.  Some things to consider when thinking about your homeowner's insurance policy:

  1. Flooding is one of the most common insurance losses.  It's unique in Florida, as flooding may occur due to heavy rains or hurricanes.  This makes it essential you find the right flood insurance coverage to complement your home insurance policy.
  2. What about low-risk areas?  There is a misconception out there that you may not need flood insurance coverage in a low-risk area.  The National Flood Insurance Program estimates that 20% of flood claims are in low to moderate risk areas.
  3. Do you need flood insurance if you already have homeowners insurance in Florida? Yes.  A standard homeowners' insurance policy does not cover damages and losses brought about by flooding.  This means just having the basic coverage does not provide the proper flood coverage needed.
